Walking Profile

This self-guided walking holiday in southern France for the most part takes place in upland or mountainous areas. The paths are well maintained. They pass through a range of types of terrain underfoot including mountainous. The walking days average about 5hrs 30. Maximum amount of ascent in a day is 860m, average is 550m. In general the walking days becoming easier as the holiday progresses and is well within the grade. This walking holiday would be suitable for those walkers used to mountains walking, as well as those more occasional walkers who are in good health and fitness.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival at Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende and night in hotel

Day 2: Tour from Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende

Your first walking day is a tour from your hotel, during which you'll pass through two superb historic villages, which are as beautiful as the wild mountains of the Mercantour through which your walking. Dinner and night at hotel in Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende. +/- 860 m, 5h30

Day 3: Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende - Fontan

Your walking trail will take you through a succession of delightful isolated villages built from dry local stone with slate roofs. Dinner and night at a hotel in Fontan, a village with an architectural style that is unique in the region.

Day 4: Fontan - Breil sur Roya

Our walking route to Breil sur Roya follows the "salt trail" and passes through Saorge, a fascinating and charming village clinging to the steep mountain sides which will leave you staring in amazement. At Breil-sur-Roya in the valley bottom you can enjoy looking around its lovely historic buidlings and monuments.

Day 5: Breil sur Roya - Sospel via Peine-Haute

A beautiful path through delightful landscapes which leads you through a well preserved perched village, an isolated chapel surrounded by olive groves and a series of gorges, with one foot in France and the other in Italy. Dinner and night in hotel at Sospel.

Day 6: Sospel - Sainte-Agnes

Chance to explore Sospel with the remains of its fortified chateau, cathedral and a number of other historic buildings recalling the importance of this settlement over the centuries. Your interesting walking trail takes you to the village of Sainte-Agnès, where it's already possible to see the Mediterranean. Dinner and night in hotel at Sainte-Agnès.

Day 7: Sainte-Agnes – Menton

Today you'll arrive at the historic old town of Menton, perched on the slopes above its port. You'll pass by the beautiful bay of Garavan, a stunning view which you won't forget in a hurry. Dinner and night in hotel at Menton.

Day 8: Menton - Beaulieu (Cap Martin & Monaco)

The border guards path is dug into the cliffs below some amazing properties, just above the sea which is lapping at the rocks below. Visit the principality of Monaco, where it's possible to take a walk on the coastal path of the Cap d'Ail, which offers great views of the beautiful inlets and bays on the Cote d'Azur. Night at Beaulieu-sur-Mer. +/- 150 m,   4h30

Day 9: Beaulieu sur Mer – Villefranche-sur-Mer – Nice

Surprising and magnificant day which leads you to the Port of Nice and the Bay des Anges. Your walking trail passes through small colourful seaside ports, around the headland of Cap Ferrat with its tourquoise waters and the charming alleyways of Villefranche sur Mer. In addition, the fortifications of Mont Boron and the coastal path in the cliffs of the Cap de Nice, make this a marvelous walking day. Night in hotel at Nice.

Day 10: Departure

End of your independent walking hoiday after breakfast. We recommend a look around the old town of Nice with its flower market and a walk along the Promenade des Anglais.
