Majestic Madeira
Madeira is a small and luxuriant subtropical island paradise of volcanic origin, 360 miles off the Africa coast. The island has an equitable daytime temperature that varies by only a few degrees either side of 20°C and has all-year-round appeal. This 7 night holiday begins in the Madeiran town of Santana on the north coast where the walks allow you to explore both the coast and levadas before crossing the mountains, which reach over 1800m along the magnificent path from Boca da Corrida. We spend a further day in the centre of the island before moving south to discover this little known but no less beautiful coastline.
WalksThis walks on this guided walking holiday are of moderate difficulty with some ascents and descents. Average distances are about 12km. The paths are generally good although there can be a limited amount of exposure in this mountainous and rugged coastal island. Day 1 - Arrival and transfer to Santana on the north coast. Overnight Santana. Day 2 - Caldeirao Verde, what a beauty, a paradise of green filtered light and clear waters. To reach this magical spot we walk along the levada swathed in a rich variety of trees and offering wonderful views down to the coast, 12km / 7.5miles. Overnight Santana Day 3 - Following an old donkey trail through patchwork fields we explore the coastline close to Santana walking down across the Sao Jorge river and up onto high cliffs with pounding waves below, 10km / 6.2miles Day 4 - Today we walk through high mountains but there is little climbing - a bonus! All around we have magnificent views as we make our way to our hotel in Encumeada, 13km / 8.2miles. Overnight Encumeada Day 5 - From our hotel we walk up to the Levada do Norte which we then follow passing through several tunnels to Folhadal (the place of the lily of the valley trees) and then down through forest and fields to Ginjas, 13km /8.2miles. Overnight Encumeada Day 6 - Today we visit the south and a stroll along the Levada da Calheta - Ponta da Pargo as it contours the sun drenched plains above the coast. To your left you have superb views up to the Paul da Serra, to your right an ever changing seascape, 15km / 9.8 miles. Overnight Arco da Calheta Day 7 - Another 5 star route to end our week along the south west coast, an exhilarating descent to Paul do Mar with its ochre to burgundy cliffs and a landscape of caves and rivulets, 8km / 5miles. Overnight Arco da Calheta Day 8 - Transfer back to the airport
